One Step Closer

The U.S. Men's National Team (that's soccer, for the uninitiated) won it's first match of ten in the final round of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, 2-1. The U.S. basically controlled the majority of the match, playing excellent tactical soccer, given the environmental conditions, and the condition of their players after only two weeks of training, due to the financial disagreement between the U.S. Soccer Federation and the players. Any win on the road is tough in the CONCACAF region, and who knows, these three points may be the margin that puts the U.S. into Germany in 2006. And, even though Trinidad & Tobago doesn't sound like an intimidating opponent, they are ranked 61st by FIFA, and recognizable names like Stern John, Dwight Yorke, Marvin Andrews, and Cornell Glen litter the roster.

This is cause for celebration! We're off to a great start! However, I don't know if I'll celebrate as fervently as this fan. It takes balls to celebrate like that, but unfortunately for him, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Kevin,

About that fan - one of the papers over here said his family weren't happy - apparently he's on medication and shouldn't have been near alcohol.

I love this bit...one of the guys in the pub that day was quoted in the paper as saying, "He said he'd cut his balls off if Wales won and he went out and did it...fair play to him."

Nice start for the US, good luck for the interminably long road ahead.

Cheers,
Adam

LOL, Adam... in some circles, this guy is probably "respected" for following through on his word! It's a sad world, man...

Kevin, I got the following last week from the GA Soccer Association:

"TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE WORLD CUP QUALIFIER IN BIRMINGHAM
U.S. MEN'S NATIONAL TEAM vs. GUATEMALA"

"The game takes place Wednesday,
March 30, at 7 p.m. CT at historic Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama."

B'ham is only a hop, skip, and a jump from Columbus - maybe 2.5 hours, so it looks like I get to go!

Awesome! I expect full coverage in the blog, plus some pictures, if possible. I went to the first qualifier, and had a blast. I took a bunch of pictures, but they were with a disposable camera, so nothing was very noteworthy. It was cool, though, to see the MNT up close and personal. I was so impressed with Donovan's touch...

Keep us posted!
